THE LETTER
-
100×100cm, Oil on canvas
This work returns to a moment from my childhood: the letter I wrote to my father and hid in the Norwegian snow. In painting it again, I let that gesture travel through time, finding its way back to me in Portugal. In the painting, the child holds the letter while the adult, through painting, answers her.
Around the central figure, symbols carry the layers of this memory. The lamb recalls the innocence of childhood, the dog stands for the faithful companion of the present, and the porcelain bird a symbol deeply rooted in Portuguese tradition becomes a fragile link between memory and place. Behind them rise the houses that belong to both worlds: the village in Portugal where I have lived, and the Norwegian landscape that shaped those early years.
The Letter is both remembrance and return a way of speaking once more to what was never answered, of giving shape to love that continues beyond distance and time.
